Callen Gibbs graduated in 2017, Computer Security one year on he’s back to tell us of his incredible year of successes.
Callen has just started his new career in Cyber Security as cyber security engineer. He started with a placement year at Alert Logic in May 2015 through the ESTnet NG programme as an engineer at the Network Operations Centre (NOC). The placement gave him a great grounding in working within the private sector for a large, well established Cyber Security company. Through the ESTnet NG programme Callen was also afforded the opportunity to visit several technology companies within Wales including General Dynamics, SPTS and Sony to name a few. These visits provided insight into how Wales is rapidly growing in the Technology area. As part of the programme, during the year he also gained ILM level 3 certification. This certification which is a leadership and management certification will help in the future and was a great opportunity. Callen was introduced to the ESTnet team through USW while applying for placements during his second year. After finishing his final exam in May 2017, he started at Capital Network Solutions in June 2017, the only CREST certified company head quartered in Wales. and he hasn’t wasted any time in the last year.
Since then Callen has achieved several certifications including GDPR F and IASME Cyber Essentials assessor status. GDPR is a foundation certification in the new General Data Protection Regulation, which came into force in May 2018. IASME is one of only four accreditation bodies for the government back Cyber Essentials Scheme, with these two certifications Callen is qualified to assess and audit companies for Cyber Essentials certification. By December 2017, he became a fully qualified penetration tester obtaining TIGER scheme QSTM in mid December. As a Qualified Security Team Member (QSTM), he is able to perform a range of penetration tests on companies, and has worked with some large organisations and institutions recently to help raise their cyber defences. TIGER scheme QSTM is a highly recognised certification, equivalent to Check Team member status.
Callen commented on his first year, “Working for the UK’s leading Cyber Essentials certification body and auditing some of the world’s largest enterprises for CE+ is a great experience, allowing the freedom to grow with the company. We are now fully focused on a range of Cyber Security matters with CE+ and penetration tests keeping me very busy.”
The best was yet to come, in May 2018 just under a year since leaving USW Callen was nominated for and won 'Best New talent' at the Welsh Technology awards, which were sponsored by ESTnet. Callen Commented, “This was a great achievement for myself and ESTnet as my placement year in 2015/2016 was as part of the ESTnet NG programme. I feel that winning this award will boost my career and set me on track to achieve my goal of being a highly skilled and recognised Cyber Security Specialist.
“With Callen’s help, CNS have now established ourselves a significant reputation, as the leading Certification Body, producing around 1500 certificates and advising on Cyber Security and the Cyber Essentials programme at the highest levels within UK. Through his efforts and demonstrable skills, Callen has earned himself a key role to play in our extensive future plans.” – Karl Greenfield, Head of Cyber Security, Capital Network Solutions Ltd
Callen really enjoyed his time at USW and the course he took, he had this to say, “These are great achievements for myself and as a USW alumni, the dedication and help from the Cyber Teaching team at USW has shaped my future and put me where I am today.”
